Impressive total solar eclipse over Cyprus in 2060

An impressive total eclipse will be visible in Cyprus in 2060, astrophysicst Dr Stelios Tsaggarides told CNA, noting that today`s partial eclipse was visible in Cyprus covering the Sun by 20%.

Today`s solar total eclipse was seen in the Faroe Islands and was partially seen (by 90%) in areas of Greenland, Iceland, Northern Scotland and Western Norway.

In Cyprus, the phenomenon was partially visible and it began at 11:05 local time (09.00 GMT), lasting almost an hour and a half.

Dr Tsaggarides told CNA that a total solar eclipse will happen just over the island of Cyprus on 30th of April 2060.

Until then, two other almost total solar eclipses will be visible in Cyprus, on the 2nd of August 2027 (sun coverage 80-90%) and on the 1st of June 2030 (90%+).

Dr Tsaggarides added that the next solar eclipse visible in Cyprus will happen on the 21st of June 2020 (30-40%).

In addition, he said that the next total eclipse of the moon will happen on the 28th of September this year visible in Cyprus.

Referring to today`s eclipse, he said “it was not such an impressive one, it was just a partial one, covering around 20% of the Sun”.

He warned that in any case, precautions have to be taken if one wants to look at the Sun, as this can harm one’s eyesight.
