Instead of the President regressing, he should focus on the Cyprus solution

Monday 21 May 2018, “Astra” radio station

Instead of President Anastasiades regressing, being political inconsistent and trying to reconcile diametrically opposing outlooks/policies on the Cyprus problem, he must decide to focus on the solution of the Cyprus problem, AKEL stressed.

Speaking to “Astra” radio station in the morning, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou stated that otherwise President Anastasiades will be held accountable for the fact that Cyprus will once more be led to partition and that he will be go down in history as the President of partition and of two states.

Mr. Stephanou added that if the Greek Cypriot side will appear to be inconsistent in relation to what has been agreed, we will once again be led to partition. He also pointed out that the preconditions for a resumption of the negotiations must be created and that’s precisely where everyone’s intentions will be judged.

At the same time, Stefanos Stefanou stressed that the stalemate surrounding the Cyprus problem harms all those who want a solution and the reunification of the country and only benefits those forces and circles who want the partition of Cyprus. This situation, he added, facilitates Turkey’s strategic plans. He noted that the deadlocks become even more dangerous for Cyprus given that Turkey is being praised by the international community and the UN, as well as by the EU too for the positive stand it showed at Crans Montana.

AKEL, he added, does not accept solutions with guarantees and occupation troops, but wants the solution of the Cyprus problem to lead to the demilitarization of the island and the abolition of the British bases.
