International conference on illegal immigration in Limassol

An international conference on illegal immigration takes place in the southern coastal town of Limassol in Cyprus.

The four – day conference, entitled “Global View on Illegal Immigration – Return and Readmission Issues”, will be attended by delegates from international and European organisations, from EU member states as well as third countries, such as Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iran, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The conference is organized by the Aliens and Immigration Service of the Republic of Cyprus and is co-financed by the EU Solidarity Fund and the Republic of Cyprus.

Delegates will exchange views and information on the issues of illegal immigration, respect of human rights and readmission procedures of illegal immigrants.

The conclusions of the conference will be forwarded to the European Commission.

On the sidelines of the conference, Peter Zenios of the Aliens and Immigration Service told journalists that Cyprus is taking measures to address the problem of illegal immigration.

The measures include the arrest of those who employ illegal immigrants and of traffickers and the enhancement of mechanisms that would allow the return of a greater number of illegal immigrants to their homelands.
