A uniformed officer has been injured as he attempted to stop a moped rider in Islington.
At around 16:15hrs on Wednesday, 25 January, the male PC spotted a moped riding erratically in Balls Pond Road, N1. The officer signalled for the rider to stop but he failed to do so.
The moped was then in collision with the officer, knocking him to the ground. The rider came off the moped and was detained by a second officer who was on scene.
The PC, aged 22, was taken to hospital by police for treatment to a leg injury – he has since been discharged.
The rider of the moped, aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, taking and driving away and possession of a class B drug and taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody.
Enquiries have since established that the moped had been reported lost or stolen.
Detective Sergeant Jean-Pascal Barbe of Islington Police said: “This shows the dangers that officers face on a daily basis as they go about their work of keeping the people of London safe.
“We are currently asking members of the public to vote in the Met’s ‘Bravery of the Year Award’ – while this is too late to be included, it epitomises the bravery police officers demonstrate time and time again.”
Enquiries into the circumstances continue.
