Juncker ready to help towards a Cyprus solution, financially as well

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker pledged himself to contribute – also financially – to the solution of the Cyprus issue, a Commission`s Spokesperson told CNA.

Juncker, who held a 50-minute long meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the Commission`s headquarters in Brussels, asked to be informed about the developments of the Cyprus issue.

“It was a meeting among friends. President Juncker wanted to be informed by Akinci about the state of affairs of the talks and the future developments. Juncker expressed readiness to help whenever and in any way he can”, the Commission`s Spokesperson told CNA.

Asked if this help could be of financial nature as well, the Spokesperson replied “yes”.

The Republic of Cyprus an EU member state since 2004, is divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May last year, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
