New Salamis reach Qtr Finals FA Sunday Cup

FA Sunday Cup

4th Round

New Salamis 1 Barnes Albion 1 New Salamis win 2-1 after extra time

New Salamis are going great guns at the moment in the All England FA Sunday Cup and it is a tremendous achievement for them, the KOPA football League and of course the community that they have reached the last eight after beating the 2013/14 FA Sunday Cup finalists from Middlesex Barnes Albion. It shows how prestigious these games are when you know finals have been played at the home of Liverpool FC, Anfield and last years final was was played at Ewood Park the home of Blackburn FC.

You could sense the tension from the start of the game when both teams were off to a nervous start and no real chances were created till the second half. New Salamis came steaming out the second half with some brilliant football , Steve Velandia had a shot from the outside of the box smash the underside of the bar. Eventually Richard Georgiou surrounded by Barnes players was able to punt the ball into the top corner of the net. Within five minutes Barnes equalised changed the gamewith Barnes putting a lot of pressure on the red’s plus it did not help when New Salamis went down to ten men when Kyri Portou was sent off for a second yellow card with ten minutes to go in normal time.

Full time ended 1-1 so into extra time they went and towards the end the red’s broke through with Nick Muir who speeded past a defender to shoot past the oncoming keeper to give New Salamis an important 2-1 lead which they were able to hold on to and win a game away to Harrow team North London Olympians in the Quarter Finals to be played Sunday February the 15th 2015.

Brotherhood 2 Omonia 6

League leaders Omonia are not going to let the top spot go easy I can see a big battle going on between them and New Salamis for the title. Omonia have been sneaking up the table in recent weeks while the red’s have been concentrating on the FA Sunday Cup. Omonia are in the lead six points clear from New Salamis and Anorthosis but Salamina have three games in hand.

A good performance all round from Omonia who were 3-0 up at half time with a great goal from Harry Vazanias who curled it into the top corner of the net. Nick Nicou scored the second and the third a brace from Harry Vazanias.

Anorthosis fought back with a late rally with goals from Vasos Krisikos 2 and Andy Cain the draw now puts Anorthosis in second place.

Arachne 1 Apoel 2

Although 1-2 it was a cracking game where several more goals could have been scored by either team. Arachne were outstanding in the first half and took the lead with a 10th minute penalty from Ant Panayi. They then missed a few good chances to go further ahead and just before half time they allowed Apoel into the game when they scored with a Vincent Lwanga strike.

In the second half Apoel woke up but both teams were pounding at each other and Apoel were able to get the better and come away with a 2-1 win with a headed goal from George Costa.

Cetinkaya Cinar 5 Maronites 1

Cetinkaya Cinar have certainly made a statement with another convincing win against a good Maronites team and it took them only 6 minutes to score when keeper Remzi’s long kick was headed on by Zaine Martin to full back Kerim Raies who run on to shoot under the keeper for 1-0. On 32 minutes Tuncay Cager split the Maronites defence open with a great pass to the tricky Tarik Kucuk who rounded the keeper to make it 2-0.

Maronites piled the pressure on at the start of the second half, but could not find their way past the solid back four of Cinar. In the 64th minute sub Jay Morris hit a unstoppable 20 yard curler to make it 3-0, but Maronites pulled one back within a minute as the their striker Tyler Barclay received a pass over the Cinar defence and placed it past Remzi for 3-1.

11 minutes later Tarik Kucuk found the very impressive Zaine Martin who raced on and shot low for 4-1.

With 2 minutes remaining Jay Morris turned in the box and scored his brace and Cinar’s fifth. And to add salt to the wound Cinar keeper Remzi made a great penalty save in stoppage time.

Its catch up time for the rest of the league as Cinar get stronger game by game.

Pantel 2 Asha 3

Asha today showed a lot of spirit and grit to come back from 2-0 to win the game 2-3. It all started very even and Asha first had the ball in the net after 20 minutes but the goal was disallowed.

Pantel started to push forward and went ahead after 30 minutes with a goal from Yiannis Yianni then just after the break Pantel went further ahead with a goal from Daniel Moysis.

Asha didn’t give up and they pressed forward and from a corner taken by Greg Timotheou they managed to pull one back to make it 2- 1, 30 minutes into the second half.

Asha equalised on 80 minutes through their striker Chris Spyrou and 2 minutes later on 82 minutes Chris Spyrou put Asha ahead for the first time in the match.

Pantel tried very hard to get back into the game but Asha held their ground to win the game.
