A 38-year-old priest from Greece serving at a chapel in a Nicosia suburb was arrested at the coastal town’s international airport for possession of three kilos of marijuana, police said yesterday.
The priest, who is married and with a young child, was arrested on Wednesday evening upon his arrival from Athens. He has been remanded in custody for eight days.
The confiscated marijuana was in his suitcase and Interpol had tipped off the police here.
The priest said he was acting as a drug ‘mule’ for the first time because his wife was seriously ill and needed the money.
