Larnaca: Thieves steal church doors and windows

THIEVES stole aluminium doors and windows from a church in Larnaca on Tuesday night only a few days after the building’s facilities were blasted by firecrackers.

Church staff saw thieves steal the aluminium doors and windows and collect metal objects in the area surrounding the church, which is a refugee settlement, Larnaca Press Agency said.

In the early hours of Easter Sunday some people placed factory-made crackers in the church’s lavatories, damaging the inside door and outside door, which was stolen on Tuesday night.

There has been a spate of metal thefts of late. “In the past they have stolen [sewer] grills so we decided to glue them down so that it’s not easy [to remove them] but it costs us to, to stick them down and then unsticking them to clean them,” Yeri mayor Argyris Argyrou said yesterday.

According to Pantelis Procopiou, head of Economides Metal Recycling Ltd, copper sells for about €5 a kilo, aluminium for €1 a kilo and a car for about €200. His company has also seen a number of thefts.
