Let’s do it Cyprus’ campaign begins with the participation of 9.500 volunteers

A total of 9.500 volunteers have so far signed up to participate in the campaign “Let`s do it Cyprus” which began on Sunday from the coastal city of Limassol. The organisers aim to mobilise as many as 10.000 volunteers by next Sunday when the campaign will conclude.

Today the volunteers began the cleaning of the seabed at the old port of Limassol. The campaign, which is a part of the global campaign “Let`s do it World”, is organized by the Office of the Environmental Commissioner, the group Let`s do it Cyprus, the Port Authority and the Fisheries and Marine Research Department.

Volunteers from the diving group “KIMON” Xylotymbou gathered waste materials found at the bottom of the old port of Limassol. Environmental Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou said that the aim is to clean our country and keep it clean forever.

Harbour Μaster Yiorgos Pouros said that the Port Authority welcomes this effort and assists the campaign with all means necessary. He said that we need to get the message across that we must protect the environment.

On behalf of the Diving Group “KIMON Xylotymbou” trainer Pambos Theodorou, said that the goal is to clean the seabed and raise awareness because we are the ones who contaminate the environment with our actions.

Let`s do it Cyprus coordinator Nikos Solomou said that people become more and more aware about how important it is to protect the environment and each year there is a reduction of the amount of garbage that is collected during the campaign.
