Over a year later and we are officially allowed out. We are like birds that have been in a cage for so long, and the door has now been left open. Some of us can’t wait to fly out, while others are so used to sitting in the cage, feeling content and safe with the familiarity of habit.
Even those who have been alone a lot of the time, have got so used to it and are thinking twice about the hustle and bustle of going out out. ‘Out out’ was a trip to Sainsburys, and now we have to get out there and be sociable again, it all sounds so tedious. Have we become a world of institutionalised hermits?
I have always loved being at home, and often when friends would ask me to go out, I would um and ah about it, as I like to go with the flow of how I feel at the time. I would however say yes, because I knew I needed to do it, because it was an opportunity to see the people I wanted to see, be around fun company, and it was good for me, and more often than not, I would have a great time being amongst those friends, listening to some live music and dancing the night away.
So what is wrong with us now? In the past, when I was constantly out and working, I longed for a night in. During our lockdown, some of us longed for a night out, yet here it is and we have become so incorporated into a system, that some of us now have to force ourselves out. What have we become and is this life as we know it?
Let’s change the recent or old habit and get out there; we are not silly, we can still do it with caution, because socialising is good for us. The interaction with others is good for our health and well-being. At the beginning of the restrictions, it was so difficult without meeting, hugging, and being amongst others, however as creatures of habit, we had got used to it and adapted, as difficult as it was for some. Now it is time to re-adjust and create new habits once again. So let’s get ourselves back in the groove and get our dancing shoes back on. Let’s meet our people that we know we can have fun with, wherever it is, whatever events we have missed the enjoyment of being able to do, let’s get out there and have some well-earned missed fun. It is good for our mind, body and soul.
Friends are important and good for us, they give us a feeling of belonging, provide comfort and joy, we can share food, drink, laughter, emotional support and guidance when required. Our friends become our chosen family, influence and shape our lives without us even realising. Let’s not miss out on precious time with them.
Let’s not be slothful, let’s not be lifeless and unspirited, instead let’s get out there and be that beautiful, social butterfly amongst a kaleidoscope of others, as one gets out there, smells the fresh air, appreciating each flowering bud of life itself.
Let’s prepare ourselves, glam up once again and make the effort to live life to the max. Have we not been denied enough great times with our loved ones?
At the beginning of this article. I was inspired to write because of the lack of lustre and enthusiasm of getting out and now at the end, I look forward to being in the presence of well-chosen company and entertainment once again.
Live, laugh, do the things you love!
