Title holders AEL missed out on the chance to go level on points with APOEL and AEK at the top of the first division on Monday night after being held to a 0-0 against Apollon in the Limassol derby.
Pambos Christodoulou’s side – who had drawn 0-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in their Europa League debut last Thursday – once again failed to find the back of the net but kept their impressive defensive line intact.
Meanwhile Apollon – who saw former player Nicky Papavasiliou make his debut as coach following the exit of George Burley – gave themselves a bit of breathing space after losing 2-0 to AEK in their previous league fixture.
Michalis Constantinou had the best chances for AEL with his header going wide in the first half while his late strike in the second half was saved by Apollon keeper Bruno Vale.
Apollon’s best chance came in the first half when Argentinean striker Emmanuel Serra’s powerful shot sailed just wide of Matias Degra’s post.
