Man charged following assault on pensioner

Officers investigating an alleged assault that occurred in Potters Bar have arrested Ryan Hewitt, aged 20, of Potters Bar, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He will appear at Hatfield Remand Court today Monday (July 10).

At around 1.30pm (Thursday, July 6) the victim – a man aged in his 90s – was sitting on a bench in Oakmere Park close to the basketball pitch and the Grove Road park entrance when he was assaulted.

He suffered two puncture wounds to his back and was taken to hospital.

Detective Inspector John Hazeldine, who is investigating, said: “This incident occurred on a sunny afternoon when I’m sure there were several people enjoying the nice weather in the park. I’m appealing to anyone who was in the park yesterday and witnessed this incident to get in touch as you may have information that could assist the investigation.

“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously and running from the park via the Grove Road exit.

“This type of crime is extremely unusual in Potters Bar and there was a significant police response following the incident.
