A 20-year-old man died on Monday night while playing football in the Livadhia area, in Larnaca.
Police said Marios Demetriou, who played in goal, fainted and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
He died in hospital at 9.35pm, police said.
A postmortem conducted on Tuesday found that the cause of death was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy — a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick.
This condition can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.
