Man jailed for assault in North London street

A man has been jailed following an assault in a north London street.

qlzfvwcnp59xxwcorxsyDevonte Brown, 19 (13.11.96), of Dover Road, N9 appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on Monday, 4 July, where he was sentenced to six months imprisonment for actual bodily harm.

He was sentenced to a further 18 months imprisonment for a separate offence of grievous bodily harm, committed on 10 June 2015 in Hornsey Road, N7.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £120.

On 26 August 2015, at around 16:15hrs, a 43-year-old man was travelling on a Route 4 bus to Lever Street, EC1. As he got off the bus, Brown barged past him.

The victim looked at Brown and was then subjected to verbal abuse. They both started walking in the same direction when Brown turned round and hit the victim in the face with a buckled rucksack.

The victim went to hospital with bruising to his face; he was treated for a cut close to his eye.

CCTV footage was obtained from the bus and Brown was subsequently identified by officers. He was arrested on 13 November 2015 and charged with the offence of actual bodily harm on 16 December 2015.

Detective Constable Annie Garrard, from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “This was a nasty assault by a violent man. This sentence shows the seriousness with which the courts take this type of offence.

“We will continue working with our partners at British Transport Police and TfL to ensure we tackle this type of behaviour on our transport network.”

Brown pleaded guilty to the offences a week before his trial was due to start on Monday, 27 June.
