A Camden man has been charged with murdering a 17-year-old girl in August 1982.

James Warnock, 56 (16.12.59) of Harrington Street, NW1 was charged on Thursday, 14 January, with the murder of Yiannoulla Yianni. He was further charged with raping the same victim.

He appears in custody at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on 14 January.

A murder enquiry was launched by the Met on 13 August 1982, after the parents of 17-year old Yiannoulla Yianni found their daughter’s body at the family home in Belsize Road, Hampstead.

A 56-year old man was arrested at an address in Golders Green on Tuesday, 12 January, and subsequently charged as above.

Detective Inspector Julie Willats, of the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “The Met never closes unsolved murders. Regardless of the passage of time, cases can and will be reviewed for any new opportunities to develop previously unknown lines of enquiry and to follow-up any fresh information which has become known to us.”
