Paul-Henri Mathieu put the Cypriot through his paces during the first set but fan favourite Marcos Baghdatis was able to power through and seal his first win of the week 7-6, 6-3 in the Kooyong Classic.
Marcos will open his Australian Open campaign next week against fellow former finalist and No. 9 seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the first round.
