Morphou Mayor briefs British High Commissioner on land development in occupied Cyprus

The Mayor of Morphou Charalambos Pittas briefed the British High Commissioner to Cyprus Ric Todd on the steps undertaken by the Municipality towards the EU on land development projects implemented in northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus and funded by the Union.

According to an announcement, issued by Morphou Municipality, Pittas had a tete-a-tete meeting with Todd at the initiative of the British High Commission as a result of the reaction of the Municipality on the illegal land development that is taking place in Turkish occupied Cyprus and especially in the area of Morphou.

During the meeting, Tod and Pittas exchange views on the efforts to solve Cyprus issue. The High Commissioner has shown great interest and has been briefed extensively on the recent developments in Morphou and the region. These projects significantly undermine the discussion and the efforts for a solution, Pittas pointed out.

At the same time, Pittas had the opportunity to discuss with Todd solution prospects as well as the concerns of the refugees and the displaced inhabitants of Morphou.

According to the announcement, Pittas had a similar meeting last month with the Ambassador of France in Cyprus Rene Troccaz.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks resumed last May aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
