MPs should remain focused on the effective handling of migration, on a national and international level, dismissing nationalistic, isolating and racist approaches, Cypriot MP Skevi Koukouma Koutra said in an intervention during the 139th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.
Koukouma noted that special attention should be given to the vulnerable groups of refugees and migrants, adding that the MPs should seek to incorporate measures to protect them in international treaties on human rights, and also play a more active role in the implementation of the Global Compact expected to be adopted in December 2018 in Morocco.
Furthermore, she said the migration issue is a recurring global phenomenon, which concerns about 250 million people, noting that long-term solutions are necessary.
