Necessary time will be given to inform the people on the agreement for a Cyprus settlement

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said that Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have discussed the issue of informing the public opinion as regards a possible agreement for a Cyprus solution.

He added that both leaders believe that the necessary time must be given, “which is surely a couple of months”, for informing the people about the agreement.

Speaking during an event organized on Thursday evening by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on `The Cyprus issue and the media: The Ethics and the Information”, Christodoulides noted that the information to be given both to the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots must be based on the same understanding about what will be agreed, and reflect the fact that the solution will be a win-win situation. He noted that if this does not happen, then the people of Cyprus will be confused.

Christodoulides stressed the need for the people to be accordingly prepared for a possible agreement on a settlement that will be put before them, adding that is it necessary to cultivate a “solution- oriented culture”. Furthermore he expressed the belief that Greek Cypriots are, in their majority, ready for a solution, more than anyone else.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged since May 2015 in UN-led talks, aiming to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
