New effort by UN envoy for resumption of Cyprus talks

UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, arrives in Cyprus tomorrow at noon, having postponed his scheduled visit for two days.

UNFICYP spokesperson Michel Bonnardeaux told CNA on Tuesday that Downer is coming tomorrow “around noon”, and will have separate meetings with the negotiators of the two sides, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Osman Ertug.

Asked how long Downer will stay on the island, UNFICYP spokesperson could not specify the length of his visit, at this stage.

He explained that there is no plan at present for meetings between Downer and the leaders of the two communities, who will be abroad tomorrow.

The UN envoy returns to Cyprus in a bid to make headway towards an agreed joint declaration between the two leaders which would pave the way towards the resumption of direct talks, stalled since the summer of 2012.
