Nikos Vertis was forced to postpone two concerts in Israel last week and return to Greece, as Israel-Gaza violence escalates.
The popular Greek singer was scheduled to perform on 12 and 13 May at Menora Mivtachim Arena, in what would have been the country’s first international shows since the coronavirus pandemic shut down live music events all around the world.
After landing at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos airport last Wednesday afternoon, Nikos recounted his terrifying experience to waiting reporters.
He stated that he was on the 20th floor of the hotel with his entourage when the strikes started – something he said, which had him extremely worried. However, the singer praised the hotel managers who acted fast to keep everyone safe.
“There is shelter in all the buildings, they are very well prepared for such situations,” Nikos said, noting that in any case, “it is a terrible feeling to hear sirens and rockets.”
“It is one thing to see it on TV, and another to live it. It’s an experience I wouldn’t wish upon anyone,” he added.
Nikos has become well-known as an ambassador for Greek music in Israel. He was expected to be accompanied by Israeli singers Sarit Hadad and Eyal Golan during the planned concerts.
