Obama and Tsipras discuss the Cyprus issue in Warsaw

The President of the United States Barack Obama and the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras discussed the Cyprus problem, on Saturday in Warsaw, Poland.

The two leaders had a thirty minute private meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.

The Greek Prime Minister stressed the importance of a just and viable solution to the issue, based on UN resolutions. The solution, he pointed out, must secure the withdrawal of the occupying forces and the abolition of the system of guarantees (Cyprus has three guarantor powers since it gained its independence in 1960 – Greece, Turkey and the UK).

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-led peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.

Besides the Cyprus issue, Obama and Tsipras discussed the Greek financial programme and debt and the refugee crisis.

Greece`s Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Defence Minister Panos Kamenos were present at the meeting.
