Sunday 9th February 2014 a much anticipated day for Omonia Under 14s Green. They faced local rivals Whetstone Pumas in the Middlesex County Cup Semi Final. With all the rain the match looked in jeopardy up until saturday, when the strong winds allowed the pitch at Whetstone to dry sufficiently for the game.
With a strong wind swirling around Omonia kicked off and were straight into the ascendency. Omonia had the better of the early exchanges, and went ahead in the 15th minute. Andreas Prodromou fed the ball back to Ben jones in midfield, he played a great ball down the right wing, Nicholas Kouroushi out sprinted the Whetstone defence and sent in a low first time cross to the arriving Josh Adewaoye who scored with a left foot shot. 1-0 to The Greens. Omonia kept up the pressure and Whetstone were reduced to long range efforts, then when they did get a chance, Sam Brazier in goal made a fantastic double save. Alex Hadjithemistou drove his team on and whilst Andreas Prodromou gave the giant Whetstone centre half nightmares. Omonia were close to scoring again. A left wing corner by Alex was curling in and was cleared off the line before Josh Barry or Ellis Routledge could get their heads to it.
5 minutes later and Omonia were further in front. An identical corner, this time Ben Jones got there first and 2-0 to Omonia at half time. Great first half.
Whetstone kicked off the second half with the wind picking up and it was backs to the wall for Omonia. Whetstone got a goal back early on, from a whipped in left wing cross which their forward steered home. Whetstone threw everything at the Omonia defence Joe Meds, Jake, Ellis & Josh were excellent and mopped up and cleared everything, and when they did break through Sam was on had to calm things down. The last minutes of the game seemed to last an eternity and with 7 minutes of injury time, Whetstone should have equalised but their striker shot over the bar. Full time 2 – 1 to Omonia Youth Under 14s Green and their first appearance in a County Cup final to come. On their Cup run they have beaten two previous finalists, a previous winner and in their 20th year as a club, could it be written that another star be added to their shirts.
