Operation to tackle youth violence in Haringey

Police in Haringey carried out a proactive policing operation in response to a recent increase in youth violence.

Operation Surge took place during the evening of Friday, 23 March, and saw almost 100 uniformed and plain clothes officers conducting visible patrols. A police dog also accompanied officers and, together with officers patrolling on foot, every available police car, van, carrier and pedal cycle was deployed on the borough.

The operation was initiated in an attempt to prevent crime and actively target criminality by providing a highly visible police presence.

With an increased number of officers on patrol, eight arrests were made for offences including possession of knives and drugs. A known gang member wanted on recall to prison was also identified and dealt with.

No instances of serious violence took place during the operation or into the weekend.

Chief Inspector Rob Ranstead, from Haringey, said: “It was a delight to lead such an impactful operation which was successful in reducing violent crime.

“Having additional officers deployed enabled us to be much more proactive in our patrols; allowing us to proactively target criminals in the area and provide significant reassurance for residents.”
