An event to mark the completion of restoration of Hamam in Kato Paphos was held on Wednesday by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme( UNDP) in the presence of many Turkish Cypriots.
The restoration works on Hamam have just been been completed and the cost has reached 53 thousand euros.
The Greek Cypriot member of the Technical Committee Takis Hadjidemetriou said that the Hamam had been abandoned for many years, adding that the Department of Antiquities has done an excellent job restoring the monument.
Hadjidemetriou said that he was proud and happy delivering this project to Paphos, noting that it will constitute an adornment for Paphos as European Capital of Culture.
He said that this monument is linked to the history of the island and shows what we can achieve through the spirit of cooperation, mutual respect when it comes to cultural heritage while he expressed the belief that this may constitute a good basis for the future and the course of our political problem.
The Turkish Cypriot member of the Technical Committee Αli Tuncay said that he was too very proud and happy of the completion of restoration of Hamam.
The Hamam, also known as the Medieval Turkish Bath, was part of a larger complex built during the Medieval period and later modified and expanded during the Ottoman period. Today it presents the typical arrangement of an Ottoman bath-house comprising a disrobing room, a warm room, and a hot room.
