Police have made a total of nine arrests in connection with Monday`s incidents against Turkish Cypriots.
The arrests took in the past 24 hours and all involve high school students.
A Police statement said they are investigating offences related to Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, causing malicious damage to property, breach of the peace in a public area, disturbance, inciting hatred or violence based on birth origin/nationality or gender identity and offences related to certain forms of racism and xenophobia according to the Criminal Law Act as well as offences related to conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor.
All persons arrested are aged between 16-18. It has not been decided yet if they will appear before a court, the statement added.
During Monday`s demonstrations by students to condemn the anniversary of the illegal declaration of the self-styled “state” in the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, three non-organized groups of students attacked cars of Turkish Cypriots during three different incidents. Two persons were injured in the attacks.
The government and the island’s political leadership have condemned the attacks, saying they should not be allowed to derail the ongoing peace process to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
