Detectives from Haringey and Hackney are jointly investigating allegations of hate crime following two separate incidents in late November.
At approximately 09:50hrs on Monday, 23 November 2015, a woman was verbally attacked by a man on a route 259 bus on Seven Sisters Road.
Passengers on the bus intervened after the man who had made Islamaphobic remarks to the woman advanced towards her raising his hand as though he was going to hit her.
The bus driver stopped the bus and ordered the man off.
Police were then called to another incident on Seven Sisters Road whereby a 38-year-old man matching the description of the suspect in the first incident allegedly spat at a woman after he had racially abused her and made Islamophobic remarks. He was arrested on suspicion of religiously and racially aggravated public order offences.
The man has been bailed to return to a north London police station to a date in mid-January pending further enquiries.
