Giorgos Mazonakis, one of Greece’s most popular and distinctive singers, died on Wednesday 9 September, after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 54 years old.
Mazonakis was rushed in critical condition to Elpis Hospital in Athens, where doctors confirmed his death.
The news sent shockwaves through Greece’s entertainment industry and among the millions of listeners who followed his career for more than three decades.
Mazonakis, who grew up in the Piraeus area and was of Cretan descent, began performing at a club in Patra in the early 1990s. His energetic stage presence soon caught the attention of Universal Music which signed him and released his debut album in 1993.
His distinctive vocal delivery, unconventional fashion choices, and commanding stage presence helped him build a public identity unlike that of any other Greek performer of his generation.
Among the songs most closely associated with his career are Savvato, Zilevo, Paidi tis Nihtas, Foveri, Tesseris, Diskola Feggaria, Ti Sou Eho Kanei, and Ores Mikres.
