Premier League

Ipswich Town secured their first Premier League victory of the season when they deservedly beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 away thanks to first-half goals by Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap on Sunday.

Promoted Ipswich took the lead just past the half-hour mark with a superb overhead kick by striker Szmodics to the delight of Blues fan and singer Ed Sheeran watching in the stands.

The visitors scored again in the 43rd minute through Delap who pounced on a rebound after Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario could only parry a low cross from Szmodics.

Tottenham dragged themselves back into the match with a powerful header by Rodrigo Bentancur after 69 minutes but they could not find an equaliser. The win moved Ipswich out of the relegation zone on eight points, while Spurs are 10th with 16.

Man United beat Leicester 3-0 in Van Nistelrooy’s last game as interim boss

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes bagged one goal and created two more in his team’s spirited 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City on Sunday, a victorious send-off for Ruud van Nistelrooy in his finale as interim manager.

United, who have had three wins and a draw across all competitions since manager Erik ten Hag was fired on Oct. 28 and replaced temporarily with Van Nistelrooy, are 13th in the league table on 15 points, three points adrift of the top five. Leicester are 17th on eight points.

Fernandes, who went his last 17 games under Ten Hag without scoring, celebrated his 250th appearance for United with a goal in the 17th minute, latching on to a back-heel pass from Amad Diallo before unleashing a low hard shot into the far corner. It was the skipper’s fourth goal in four games for Van Nistelrooy.

Leicester defender Victor Kristiansen was credited with United’s goal in the 38th minute when Fernandes missed an intended header of Noussair Mazraoui’s cross but the ball pinged off his thigh before deflecting off Kristiansen and in.

Alejandro Garnacho netted United’s third in the 82nd minute when Fernandes spotted him on the left and the Spaniard sent a curling shot into the top corner.

Newcastle rally to beat high-flyers Forest

Newcastle United striker Joelinton scored his first goal since August as they came from behind to defeat Nottingham Forest 3-1 in their Premier League clash at the City Ground on Sunday, ending the fine run of their hosts in recent weeks.

Defender Murillo had put Forest into a first half lead, but Newcastle piled on the pressure after falling behind and Alexander Isak scored for the fourth consecutive game to draw the visitors level after 54 minutes.

There were chances at both ends after that, but Newcastle took theirs as Joelinton curled a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner and Harvey Barnes added a late third.

It ends Forest’s run of three consecutive league wins but they stay third in the table with 19 points from 11 games, while Newcastle climb to eighth with 18.

Bruno Fernandes marked his 250th Manchester United appearance by playing a starring role as Ruud van Nistelrooy signed off his stint in interim charge with a 3-0 Premier League win over Leicester.

Fernandes scored the opener and claimed a second – which went down as a Victor Kristiansen own goal – before setting up Alejandro Garnacho for an excellent third as United completed a third win in four games since Erik ten Hag was sacked.

Newcastle’s impressive second-half performance earned a deserved win at the Premier League’s surprise package Nottingham Forest.

Murillo gave Forest a half-time lead but Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes all scored after the break as the Magpies denied the hosts a fourth straight top flight win for the first time in 29 years.

Eddie’s Howe side climb to eighth while Forest remain third, although only a point separates them in a congested table.

Newcastle enjoyed the better start but paid the price for leaving Murillo, who earned his first call-up to Brazil’s squad this month, free to nod in Anthony Elanga’s free-kick after 21 minutes.

Murillo underlined the confidence streaming through this Forest squad. He had never scored a senior goal but confided in club staff this week he would net against the Magpies.

It was sloppy from the visitors and they were equally careless going forward, failing to seriously trouble Forest despite Matz Sels’ save from Dan Burn.

Forest were unable to build on the lead, though, and Newcastle emerged for the second half with renewed vigour and were level within nine minutes.

Bruno Guimaraes had already gone close before Isak fired in off the post after Chris Wood was unable to clear Anthony Gordon’s corner.

Nick Pope had earlier denied Nicolas Dominguez but the Magpies took control and Joelinton put them ahead with 18 minutes left when he curled in from the edge of the box.

It was left to Barnes to add a late third, three minutes after coming on, when he fired in low to finish off a quick break.

Ipswich held on for a 2-1 win at Tottenham to celebrate their first win of the season – and their first in the Premier League in 22 years.

The Tractor Boys have struggled to hold on to leads following their long-awaited return to England’s top flight this summer.

But they finally did enough to clinch all three points – and move out of the bottom three at the expense of Crystal Palace – Sam Szmodics steering an overhead kick beyond Guglielmo Vicario to give them the lead.

Kieran McKenna’s side, wearing their pink third kit designed in collaboration with supporter and global music star Ed Sheeran – who was watching in the stands, doubled their advantage when Liam Delap bundled in just over 10 minutes later.

There was some boos from the home fans at half-time and within four minutes of the restart Spurs had the ball in the net, only for Dominic Solanke’s effort to be ruled out for handball.

That momentum faded until Rodrigo Bentancur gave them hope with 21 minutes left, heading home from a Pedro Porro corner.

But Solanke’s late effort, blocked by goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, was the closest they went to equalising as Ipswich secured their first top-flight victory since winning 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough in April 2002 – and their first away since a 2-1 victory at Everton in February 2002.

Pedro Neto drilled in a fine equaliser but Chelsea and Arsenal both fell further behind Premier League leaders Liverpool as a result of their entertaining draw at Stamford Bridge.

They are now nine adrift of top spot having started the weekend seven back, while Arsenal are without a win in their past five games in all competitions.

The visitors opened the scoring when Gabriel Martinelli slammed the ball past Blues keeper Robert Sanchez at his near post after collecting a back-post cross from the returning Martin Odegaard.

Chelsea’s leveller was deserved. Neto ran on to an Enzo Fernandez pass before cutting inside and striking a powerful low left-footed shot past David Raya’s dive.

England winger Bukayo Saka limped off late on with an injury as both sides strived to create a winning chance.

Arsenal came closest but Leandro Trossard was unable to divert William Saliba’s cross into the net from six yards, a second before referee Michael Oliver blew for full-time.

Chelsea have lost once in their past 10 matches and played like a team filled with confidence.
