Preparing for Easter

Whilst CyWineFest is just around the corner, we pause in our cravings for all milomena dishes of Cypriot cuisine’s deliciousness, and focus on the most important day in the Orthodox Christian calendar – Easter!

Confusing isn’t it – having two Easters? Just imagine how the children feel! We went through it as children too, having a different date for Easter, with different traditions. The truth is this, this has happened to many generations going all the way back to the great schism of 1054; The western, Catholic Church, began its separation from the Eastern, mostly Orthodox Churches. The differences keep coming as the years pass by, but the important thing to remember is that Easter is a time for renewal, reflection and resurrection, even if the east and the west have different days for it!

Great Lent marks the preparations for PASCA/ ‘Pas-ha’; 40 days before the Great Fast, traditionally the fasts were vegan, whereas the west tends to pick a certain food items to exclude from their diet, which should in fact be something you struggle to live your life without and chocolate is a common choice for many! I presume that’s why there’s such a mad rush to crack open the Easter egg! The eggs are symbolic of the Anastasis (The resurrection), the cracking of the eggs, tsakrisma, means that Jesus Christ has trampled death and given hope to all mankind.

Whether it be one item or all meat and dairy based products, one is taught discipline and sustenance from good and healthy earthy foods. The fast enables oneself to build a strength of character and to also explore and discover all the various different vegan dishes available from cold veg, drizzled with olive oil, lemon and sea salt, to grilled veg like grilled aubergines served with an aubergine dip! As well as the multitude of pasta dishes available, we’ve opted to show off kritharaki, more commonly known by the Italian Orzo pasta, with boiled courgettes and broccoli, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been eating these foods your entire life!

CyWineFest opens its doors in just over 50 days time, and there are a few new additions – new exhibitors both British and British Cypriot owned are ever discovering our event adding to the already wide-ranging products and produce available.
