President Anastasiades stresses importance of EU Energy Union for Cyprus

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has stressed the importance of the Energy Union for Cyprus and the EU as a whole. Speaking to the press after the conclusion of the European Council meeting which took place in Brussels this week, President Anastasiades said that for Cyprus there are two issues of great importance regarding the Energy Union.

The first one, he said, is the exploitation of the domestic energy sources, like the natural gas found in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. The second issue, the Cypriot President noted, concerns the respect of the sovereignty and the sovereign rights of every EU member state to explore and exploit their natural resources. Both issues, he went on to say, were discussed and included in the European Council conclusions.

The EU heads of state and government discussed during the EU Summit a series of other issues as well, like the situation in the Ukraine, in Libya, as well as the issue of Greece during a mini Summit yesterday evening. Referring to Greece, Anastasiades said that the outcome of the discussion was a positive one, explaining that the process decided on the 20th of February this year, was put on track again. A positive conclusion will be for the benefit of Greece, the eurozone and Europe all together, President Anastasiades concluded.
