President discusses Cyprus with UNSC permanent members

Developments in the Cyprus problem and Turkish threats against Cyprus regarding drilling for hydrocarbons in the Republic’s exclusive economic zone, as well as the Cypriot EU Presidency were the main issues raised by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias with the Ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

President Christofias, who hosted a luncheon for the permanent members, thanked them for their support and Resolution 2026 which says that the two communities must agree on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem before an international conference is called for the international aspects.

He also briefed them on the talks with the Turkish Cypriot side, noting that they were not moving forward due to the stance of the Turkish side.

President Christofias referred to the issue of the fenced-off town of Famagusta and his proposal for the reopening of the town, which was not met positively by the Turkish side.

He said this was yet another example of the Turkish side not viewing some ideas as opportunities for cooperation, such as the discovery of hydrocarbons, but as challenges and reasons for tension.

Regarding the issue of Turkish threats in the southeastern Mediterranean, President Christofias said the Greek Cypriot side has repeatedly shown its will for all Cypriots to benefit from the natural wealth, in the framework of a reunified Cyprus.

The President expressed satisfaction over the fact that an American company is involved in exploratory drilling and that powerful states have shown an interest in the second round of licensing.

The Ambassadors referred to efforts made by President Christofias to solve the Cyprus problem and for initiatives that created the preconditions for benefits for both sides in Cyprus, and made clear that drilling in its exclusive economic zone was the right of the Republic of Cyprus.

They also exchanged views on various international issues, such as the Middle East and especially Syria.

The luncheon was also attended by Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Undersecretary to the President Titos Christophides, and Cyprus` Permanent Representative to the UN Nicos Emiliou.
