President reiterates will to continue efforts for a Cyprus solution, condemning UDI of pseudo-state

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades reiterates the political will and determination of the Greek Cypriot side to continue efforts to reach a functional solution of the Cyprus problem, based on the UN Security Council resolutions and the European principles and values, the Presidency of the Republic notes in a press release.

The Presidency of the Republic states that this year marks 39 years since the day Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership proceeded to declare the pseudo-state, in violation of international law and legality.

It underlines that the President of the Republic and the government strongly condemn the separatist movement, which is also condemned by the entire international community through a series of resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

However, it is added, Turkey and its subordinate leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community in occupied Cyprus, not only continue, but intensify their provocations and illegal actions both at sea and on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, culminating in the actions of the occupying regime in Famagusta, which are in violation of every international legitimacy.

“The President of the Republic reiterates the political will and determination of our side to continue efforts to reach a functional solution, based on the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the European principles and values, with the goal of a peaceful coexistence and co-creation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, which will guarantee the human rights of all Cypriot citizens, without dependencies on third parties and anachronistic guarantees”, the Presidency concludes.

The unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) in Cyprus’ Turkish occupied northern area, took place on 15 November 1983.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island`s northern third. Numerous rounds of talks under UN aegis to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results.
