President to inform political parties and citizens about his proposal on new Geneva Cyprus talks

  • President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will brief on Monday the parliamentary parties on the proposal he has handed over to the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci during their most recent meeting, in the framework of the UN -led peace talks aiming at a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The President’s proposal concerns a return to Geneva for peace talks in a way that would create the preconditions for a political settlement.

President Anastasiades will first inform the leaders or representatives of parliamentary parties during a meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue, scheduled for Monday at 1000 hours local time (0700 GMT).

Later in the day, he said he would brief the people of Cyprus on the content of his proposal and the state of play at the talks.

In recent statements, the President said that he had the opportunity during a meeting with Akinci to submit a structured and specific proposal which, if accepted, could create the prospects for a solution, irrespective of when presidential elections take place.

Government Spokesperson Nicos Christodoulides said that after the briefing of the political parties, the President would make “very specific” public statements with regard to the content, the rationale and the purpose of the President`s proposal and the facts it creates.

According to Nicos Christodoulides, “the proposal of the President of the Republic, if it gets a positive response, may lead to the desired outcome of a solution to the Cyprus problem,” noting that “this is time for the truth if we really want a solution”.
  • Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
