President Nikos Christodoulides will travel to El Alamein, Egypt, on Tuesday to participate in the Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Trilateral Summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
Letymbiotis said President Christodoulides will travel to El Alamein on Tuesday morning, following an invitation from President el-Sisi, to take part in the trilateral summit with the Egyptian and Greek leaders.
Prior to the trilateral summit, President Christodoulides will hold a bilateral meeting with his Egyptian counterpart.
Noting that the Trilateral Summit is taking place at a particularly important juncture for the wider region, Letymbiotis said that, in light of broader geopolitical developments, the importance of the stable and longstanding cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the value of close coordination through regional cooperation frameworks, is becoming even more evident, with particular importance attached to the Cyprus-Greece-Egypt trilateral partnership.
He noted that the trilateral framework has become an important mechanism for regional coordination and cooperation, capitalising on the geographical position of the three countries, the membership of Cyprus and Greece in the European Union, and Egypt’s particularly important role in the Arab world and the wider region.
According to the Spokesperson, President Christodoulides will hold a bilateral meeting with President el-Sisi before the trilateral summit.
“Relations between Cyprus and Egypt, which are based on longstanding historical and political ties, have expanded and deepened significantly in recent years and have now been institutionally upgraded to the level of a Strategic Partnership,” he said.
He added that cooperation between the two countries extends across a broad range of areas, with particular emphasis on energy, security and the economy, as well as close political and diplomatic coordination on regional and international developments.
The developments in the wider region, as well as the further strengthening of cooperation between the three countries, will be at the centre of discussions during the Trilateral Summit, Letymbiotis said.
The aim, he added, is for the three countries to contribute to consolidating conditions of security, stability and cooperation in a region of geostrategic importance.
As part of his visit, President Christodoulides will also attend, as an honorary guest of President el-Sisi, the opening ceremony of the El Alamein International Airshow.
The Trilateral Summit will begin at 1pm, with the three leaders expected to make statements to the media following its conclusion.
President Christodoulides will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos, Letymbiotis and government officials.
