Cyprus: Two sides expected to conclude exchange of documents

The exchange of documents between the two communities in Cyprus on the chapter of property is expected to be completed on Tuesday, as was the request by the UN Secretary General, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said.

He also assured he would not accept the convening of an international conference on the Cyprus problem, if the conditions set by the UN Security Council are not met.

Speaking on his return to the Presidential Palace after a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, in the context of UN-led direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, President Christofias said that they discussed procedural issues and that he clarified the conditions set by the Greek Cypriot side regarding an international conference.

“I was given the opportunity to clarify that forcing the process was unacceptable and that if the conditions set by the Security Council itself are not met, then in no case will we accept an international conference,“ he pointed out.

Replying to questions, President Christofias said that Eroglu`s positions on an international conference differ and that the Greek Cypriot side has clarified who should take part in such a conference, which includes the Republic of Cyprus.

President Christofias also said that his next meeting with Eroglu would be on February 21, with the chapter of property on the agenda.

Regarding the exchange of documents, President Christofias said the Greek Cypriot side has already given the requested information, while that given by the Turkish Cypriot side is inadequate.
