Today’s is only the latest in a series of alarming incidents at the prison in the last three months which have included three suicides and the gang-rape of a Romanian inmate by four other prisoners.
On Sunday, President Anastasiades visited the Romanian rape victim at hospital. He said he had wanted to encourage the young man to come forward with the truth and not to fear any threat.
The president said he was furious with the situation in the prison and promised that action would be taken and responsibilities apportioned for the bestial behaviour.
