- A recycling vending machine for separate collection of waste of plastic, glass and metal packaging, was installed recently at the Mackenzie coast, in the coastal town of Larnaka.
According to a press release by the Larnaka Municipality, the machine was placed in the framework of the program to reduce solid municipal waste of coastal hotel units and other mass production waste in cooperation with the Environment Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment.
The machine gives the economic incentive to the - citizens and guests of the town to actively participate in recycling. People may place the recyclable materials into the machine and in return they will receive a voucher of one cent for each recycled material.
The vouchers, when they reach at least 50 cents, will be exchanged with parking tickets in municipal parking places, cultural events of the municipality and renting of sunbeds and umbrellas at the beach.
In addition, citizens will have the opportunity to choose to donate their vouchers for a good cause.
At the end of every year the Larnaka Municipality will announce the total amount and the organisations that will benefit from the peoples` donations.
