Restoration works on the Monastery of Apostle Andreas in occupied Karspasia peninsula approach completion according to Greek Cypriot Head of bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage Takis Hadjidemetriou.
Hadjidemetriou was speaking to the press after a meeting of the Parliamentary Refugee Committee that held a discussion on the issue.
He noted that the contract foresees that restoration of the Monastery should be completed by the end of May 2016, however he pointed out that there might be a delay.
“When the Monastery will be delivered, it will be in excellent condition, even better than prior 1974,” he stressed, noting that the next stage involves the medieval chapel.
As he explained, for this stage, an archaeological excavation has already taken place in order to make sure that there are no impediments. A geological survey also took place.
“We are ready to proceed to the 2nd stage” Hadjidemetriou stressed, adding that the 3rd and 4th stage involve the area and the buildings around the Monastery and that it might be possible to merge those stages.
As he noted all the stages should be completed within a time-frame of two years.
