Restrictions on movement at Pournara migrant camp in Cyprus due to scabies infestation

Entry is forbidden at the Pournara Temporary Accommodation Centre in Kokkinotrimithia after the Ministry of Health declared on Tuesday the migrant centre a “local infected area” citing public health laws due to a scabies infestation.

A Health Ministry statement said entry/exit is forbidden, except for new arrival of migrants or those working at centre or for humanitarian and medical purposes.

The protection of public health and a health care system are the government’s responsibility as well as restricting the spread of scabies which has infected a number of immigrants at the Pournara centre, the Ministry said.

On Tuesday, the cabinet declared Pournara a “local infected area”.

Thirty people are taking medication to combat the infestation and have also been put in isolation.
