Russia supports and will continue to support efforts towards the solution of the Cyprus problem, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Nicosia, Stanislav V. Osadchiy said, noting that when Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov visits Cyprus, he will get a clearer picture of the situation.
Speaking after a meeting with AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou, Osadchiy said “we support and we supported and in the past every effort to solve the Cyprus problem” and noted that press reports that present Russia as not wanting a solution “are not correct.”
“We support and will support in the future efforts towards the solution of the Cyprus problem. This is certain”, he said, adding that “when Lavrov comes to Cyprus he will get a clearer picture.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks are currently underway between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, with an aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.
