Saracosti, the beginning of Lent, celebrated at the Cypriot Community Centre

A warm, family atmosphere enveloped everyone at the event organised by the Cypriot Women’s League and the Cypriot Community Centre on Monday 3rd March 2025, to celebrate Saracosti – Kathara Deftera – the beginning of Lent.
The meaning and significance of Saracosti – Tessaracosti – 40 days before Easter – was related by His Grace Bishop Iakovos, who addressed those present – love, kindness, family, community, sacrifice are all relevant.
His Excellency, the High Commissioner of Cyprus in the UK, Dr. Kyriakos Kouros, accompanied by Mrs Vasiliki Kourou, also greeted the event.
Tasty “fasting” food prepared by the Cypriot Community Centre’s staff and volunteers of the Cypriot Women’s League was accompanied by the kind donation of wine by his Eminence, our Archbishop Nikitas, whose loving wishes were expressed to all present.
Marina Skaya wrote and read a poem about love, kindness and sacrifice. Musicians Makarios, Gerasimos and Andy played Greek and Cypriot music and traditional songs for a celebrative atmosphere.
A raffle to raise funds for the services of the Community Centre was held with superb prizes, all donated from the Cypriot Community Centre, the Cypriot Women’s League members, MPS Greek & Cypriot Association, Kikis Butchers, Aroma Patisserie and Taste of Cyprus bakery.
Evoulla Nicolaou, Chair of Cypriot Women’s League, greeted the guests and all present.
Cypriot Community Centre Manager, Christalla Evdokimou, organised the whole event.
