Larnaca District Court ordered on Sunday the five-day remand of a 62-year-old businessman from Lebanon, in connection with the seizure of five tonnes of bomb-making material, namely ammonium nitrate, that was found at the residence of a 26-year-old Lebanese man, in Larnaca. The hearing was conducted behind closed doors for national security reasons at the request of the prosecution.

According to information, the 62-year-old businessman, who was arrested on Saturday, is the owner of a transportation company. He allegedly agreed to transfer the ammonium nitrate to Cyprus in ice packs included in first-aid kits. Sources said that the transfer began in 2011.

The court had extended on Friday the detention of the 26-year old Lebanese man, who is the holder of a Canadian passport, by eight days. He was arrested in late May after ammonium nitrate was found at his house in Larnaca. He is facing possible charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and illegal possession and transfer of explosive materials.
