Snow leads to crashes and delays in parts of southern England

More than 50 schools are closed and at least 10 people have been injured in crashes in Essex after snow fell across parts of south-east England.

Flights were delayed as both Stansted and Luton Airports’ runways temporarily shut while they were cleared of snow.

The terminals remained open but passengers were advised to check with their airlines before travelling and to allow extra time to get to the airport.

In north-east Scotland schools closed and journeys were delayed.

More than 10 schools in Aberdeenshire were closed, as were some in Shetland while the weather also disrupted pupil transport.

Essex Police said there had been 45 reported crashes since 05:30 GMT.

Further wintry showers

A spokesman warned of treacherous driving conditions.

Gritters have been sent out to treat roads.

The Met Office has warned of further wintry showers across Essex.

Stansted’s runway was able to open again just before 08:30 GMT, but a spokesman for the airport said that some flights had been cancelled.

A Stansted spokesman said: “Northern Essex seems to have got the worst of the snow and we had to shut the airport at 06:00 GMT.

“The roads round here are treacherous.”

Traffic information company Inrix warned drivers that many roads in the Home Counties were snow-affected, with the A505 blocked between Hitchin and Letchworth in Hertfordshire.

Among other roads with poor conditions was the A2 in Kent.

A number of main line rail services and Tube trains were delayed.

No trains were able to run between Watford Junction in Hertfordshire and Harrow and Wealdstone in north-west London, while snow caused disruption between London and Reading in Berkshire.

Rail services were unable to run between Barnes and Hounslow via Brentford in west London, while there were delays between London and Ashford International in Kent and also between Sevenoaks in Kent and Hither Green in south-east London.

In London, there were delays on the London Overground and the Metropolitan, Central and Bakerloo Tube lines.
