UN Secretary General’s Deputy Special Advisor in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar met on Wednesday with Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci and stressed that she is continuing discussions with both sides and when there are any developments she will announce them.
The meeting lasted about an hour and Spehar, who was received on Tuesday by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, said that she had a good meeting with Akinci.
“The UN will continue to do its job. As for next steps, of course it’s always up to the two sides. I’ll be sure to let you know if there are any further developments,” she added.
UN continues its effort to arrange a social meeting between the two leaders, Anastasiades and Akinci with Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou stressing that President Anastasiades reiterated to Spehar his readiness for a social meeting, without any preconditions.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. The latest round of UN-peace talks at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
