Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides held a meeting on Friday with UN Europe Division Department Director Elizabeth Spehar, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem.
According to diplomatic sources, the focus of their meeting was the ongoing Cyprus talks aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem. The same sources said that they discussed the prospects of the Cyprus talks, but also the difficulties arising.
The UN Secretary General`s report on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which will be published mid-June, as well as the UN Security Council resolution for the renewal of the UNIFCYP`s mandate, were also discussed.
Christodoulides, who was due to hold a meeting with the Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, held instead a telephone conversation with him, due to an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, agreed last February on a joint declaration, which paved the way for the UN-backed talks to resume with the aim of reunifying the island under a federal roof.
