Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides expressed the conviction that the goal to liberate Cyprus from the Turkish occupation army will have more chances to succeed when there is unity.
In statements on the sidelines of the doxology for the anniversary of the anti-colonial liberation struggle of 1955-1959, held in Paralimni in the southeast of Cyprus, Christodoulides said that one of the reasons for the successful outcome of the struggle which led to the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, was the fact that the people were united.
He said that the most important message of the day is that there is a common goal to end the Turkish occupation of Cyprus and reunify the island, and that this goal will have more chances to succeed if we cooperate together.
The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, is divided by Turkish troops since the Turkish invasion in 1974. UN led talks, aiming at reunifying the island under a federal political system, resumed in May 2015. Turkey still occupies 37% of Cyprus` territory and refuses to withdraw its troops despite numerous resolutions and decisions by international organisations and Courts.
