Remarks by US Secretary of State John Kerry that the United States were working on Cyprus quietly, was one of the issues raised by reporters during a State Department briefing on Monday by Spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki, who was asked what the US goal was and who the negotiator was.
“I don’t want you or anyone to over-read into what he stated. Obviously, this is an issue we’re engaged in. Our position hasn’t changed. But he wasn’t indicating that there was a new process or system underway that you’re not aware of,” Psaki said.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
