Teenager arrested after snatching phone from woman in Camden

A teenager has been caught and arrested following a moped-enabled snatch in Camden.

On Tuesday 20 March, at 20:14hrs, a female was standing outside a petrol station on Chalk Farm Road, Camden holding her mobile phone.

A rider and pillion passenger on a stolen moped then rode up to her, snatched her phone and made off.

The victim contacted police who attended the scene while other units conducted searches in the area for the suspects.

The vehicle involved in the offence was then spotting along Ferdinand Street, away from Chalk Farm Road.

A short while later the vehicle was driven into South End Close at speed where it was met with police units who were dealing with a separate matter of anti-social behaviour.

Officer chased the suspect who made off on foot upon sighting police. He was seen to discard a phone in the street before running into a dead end and was seen to further discard a number of phones.

The teenager, a 17-year-old male [A], was then detained and arrested for robbery and theft of motor vehicle.

Officers recovered the phones, one of which was confirmed as belonging to the victim. The rider was also found to be in possession of two knives.

The male arrested was then taken into custody at a north London police station. Enquiries continue to trace the other individual involved in this incident.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Douglas, leading the investigation, said: “These offenders rely on the unwariness of the public to snatch their phones while they make calls so it is so important that the public is aware of their surroundings at all times and protect their personal property. Smartphones are very valuable to these criminals and they can snatch them in an instant.

“I’d like to remind everyone that if you commit such an offence we will do everything we can to find you bring you to justice.”

Anyone with further information on this incident and the pillion passenger involved is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
