An Austrian citizen, who was listed by Europol as a terrorism-related suspect, was deported on Friday morning from Cyprus, according to Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou.
Despite being on the particular list, the deported Austrian has not been arrested in relation to any crime, nor was he extradited, the Minister clarified on Friday. He added, moreover, that Cyprus has not received any information linking the suspect to a terrorist act.
The Austrian was arrested on Wednesday evening while trying to cross from a Nicosia checkpoint, from the Turkish-occupied to the government-controlled areas of the Republic. According to Nicolaou, the suspect told the Police that he came to Cyprus in order to visit the Hala Sultan Tekke, a Muslim shrine near the city of Larnaca, on the eastern coast of Cyprus.
